PROCESSING
Pointed Functionality, Critical Design: Welcome to Work
A game made through Processing: User Experience plays a very pointed role in this game. I utilize smaller fonts at points where users may be catching the “fine print” of a toxic work environment, implement intentionally convoluted “phases” in the game that reset user progress, and once the game starts, there’s no way to escape.
These choices result in a feeling of chaos, stress, and entrapment, hidden within aesthetic-at-first-glance graphics that I designed.
If I were to develop upon this project for it to be played in a larger environment, I would add an explicit “end game” option, and increase the game size as a whole.
Additionally, I would expand on the game’s functionality to make the experience engagement longer, and add more layered “leveling up” versus “leveling down.”
This project works in tandem with my “Productivity Sensor” which can be found in the Arduino section of my designs.
Educational Interactivity: Homelessness in New York City
When using code to educate about an issue as serious as supporting New York City’s homeless population, I didn’t want to gamify the experience drastically. I felt that making this project with a more serious tone while incorporating engaging interactions was the best way to go about this project.
If I were to further develop this project, I would fix the audio from the “read-aloud” function to be quieter and smoother. I would also consider building this program using other means, such as constructing a web page or using another creative coding language. With the primary function being awareness, using HTML, p5, or JavaScript would be more relevant in achieving that goal, as they are more native to the web environment.
Scroll Game: Reproductive Rights
It should be noted that this project was made in 2021, before Roe v. Wade was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.
I took a more playful way to engage in conversation surrounding women’s reproductive rights, and I imagined my audience to be adolescent women who may struggle to talk about their reproductive rights in light of an unplanned pregnancy.
This project includes a lot of fun, interactive elements — my favorite part is being able to grab the Clinic Escort to navigate the crowds.
I used hand-illustrated graphics to establish a clear aesthetic to the gameplay, and I’m very proud of the results.
To improve this project now, I would make the interactions more clear to the user, fix some of the glitchy graphics, and work on the cohesion of the layout.
Educational Choose Your Own Adventure: Be Well.
This project was my first large project in Processing, and while there definitely are areas that I would improve now (such as making the interactions more clear, improving how the wellness sheets are displayed, and increasing text legibility), I love the colorway and overall feel of this project.
I also think that this project is a demonstration of code’s creative power in education: with clear graphics showing Bloop’s stress going down and concrete examples of different wellness areas, the user is able to easily digest the information with the option of learning more deeply by investigating the wellness sheets.
